How Are Scissors Left-Handed

How to tell the difference between right-handed and left-handed scissors

Step 1: Take any pair of scissors you have at hand. Hold them so that you have a handle in your left hand and a handle in your right hand with the blades pointing away from you.

Step 2: Now look at the blades - which blade is on top? If the blade coming from the handle in your left hand is on top of the other blade, they are GENUINE left-handed scissors. Turn them over and you will see that the topmost blade is still the one that comes from the left handle!

Step 3: It is much more likely that the scissors you have close at hand have the top most blade coming from the handle in your right hand - the scissors you are holding are right-handed scissors. Turn them over and you'll see that it is still the blade that comes from the right handle which is on top.

Benefits of GENUINE left-handed scissors for left-handers

It is technically impossible to make "ambidextrous scissors" that work equally well for both lefties and righties. Many manufacturers claim their scissors are "universal" or "suitable for left and right hand use". This only refers to the handles, which have not been moulded to fit the right hand knuckle, but they have no advantage for left-handers whatsoever as the blades are still set right-handed!

With genuine left-handed scissors, the cutting action of the left hand pushes the blades together to give a smooth cut the whole length of the blades and a left-hander has a clear view of the cutting line. When left-handers uses right-handed scissors, they have to push the thumb and index finger together in an unnatural way to make the scissors cut, causing marks on the hand and eventually callouses. Also, they have to look over the top blade, which obscures the cutting line.

Importance of GENUINE left-handed scissors for a left-handed child

Providing your left-handed child with genuine left-handed scissors at an early age will save your child from losing confidence and self esteem - the natural progression of things arising from feeling useless and clumsy compared to their right-handed friends.  The tragedy is that so many of these negative outcomes and tears of frustration can so easily be avoided!

When young children first start to cut out shapes with scissors, it is a big step - and a frustrating step if you can't do it and everyone else can! A left-handed child using right-handed scissors will find that they cannot see the line they are trying to cut along and the paper tends to bend between the blades rather than being cut cleanly.

With truly left-handed scissors these problems do not arise, as your natural cutting action matches that of the scissors. Just hold the scissors straight and naturally and do not try to twist the blades.
